"...How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his own personal growth?”
~ Carl Rogers
Whether you're new to talk therapy or just seeking maintenance in living, balance or persistent mental health issues, you've come to the right place. Our mental health issues may not always be our fault, but they are our responsibility. This responsibility is what we owe ourselves and others in our lives to keep connected. If you're feeling life is too much or so overwhelmed that you can't keep up, here you will find respite, compassion and management. Using existential theories as a base, I know the type of rapport we have to reach in order to enter into a healthy, trusting therapeutic relationship. Experiential learning will also be at the cornerstone of our time together. Action is needed for both change and maintenance of the human mind, body and soul.
Jeal-Paul Satre famously said "Hell is other people." Much like in the play No Exit from which this quote derives, it can also feel for us that we are trapped by the judgements of others. Our relationships define us, make us grow, break our hearts and give us joy. They are tree that bares the fruit of our shared existence and must be nurtured as you would any tree in an orchard. I say orchard because I believe who you let in your life, aside from family (and even then), is in your control. Some branches need pruning, some weeds need pulling and some times, good ol' fashioned TLC is in order.
"And ever has it been known that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation."
~ Khalil Gibran
“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger — something better, pushing right back.”
~ Albert Camus
"To thine own self be true" is the quote you can find on many AA medallions as reminder of the radical honesty toward oneself and others it can take to create and maintain sobriety. Regardless of what stage in your recovery you're in, and what you're recovering from, recovery is a process that includes much more than abstinence from certain substances or behaviors. It is getting to the essence of why said substances or behaviors have caused enough pain to seek out help or change. Finally, understanding where those substances and behaviors fit in our lives, for better or worse.
